Singer Mujib Pardeshi shown arrested in Tk4.40 lakh cheque dishonour case
According to the case documents, Mujib was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined Tk8.80 lakh on 21 November 2007.
Folk singer, composer and music director Mujib Pardeshi has been shown arrested in a cheque dishonour case involving Tk4.40 lakh.
Dhaka's 5th Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sadiq Ahmed passed the order today (18 August) following an application by the plaintiff, confirmed Shah Alam Mia, bench assistant.
According to the case documents, Mujib was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined Tk8.80 lakh on 21 November 2007.
Of the fine, Tk5 lakh was ordered to be paid to the plaintiff, while Tk3.80 lakh was to be deposited with the state treasury.
The case statement says Mujib took Tk4.40 lakh from the plaintiff in 2003, promising to send the plaintiff's younger brother, Md Solayman Sardar, to England.
Of the amount, Tk2.20 lakh was paid through a bank and the remaining Tk2.20 lakh in cash.
After Mujib failed to send Solayman to England, the plaintiff demanded a refund.
Mujib subsequently issued two cheques worth Tk2.20 lakh each, but both were repeatedly dishonoured due to insufficient funds.
Despite receiving several legal notices, Mujib allegedly failed to repay the money, prompting the plaintiff to file the case on 1 June 2004.
Earlier, Mujib was also sent to jail on 4 August in another cheque dishonour case involving Tk10 lakh filed by Idris Ali Biswas in Magura in 2022.
In that case, Magura's Second Joint Sessions Judge Muhammad Anwar Sadat sentenced Mujib to one year of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk10 lakh on 15 March 2023.
As Mujib was absconding when the verdict was delivered, the court issued an arrest warrant.
He was later arrested by Uttara West police and produced before the court, which subsequently sent him to jail.
