Madrasah student sent on 5-day remand over child's sexual abuse, death in Dhaka
Police arrested the accused from Pabna last night.
A Dhaka court today (21 May) placed a 20-year-old madrasah student on a five-day remand in connection with the death of a child found hanging at a madrasah in the capital's Banasree area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman passed the order after a hearing, confirmed state prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi.
The accused, Md Shihab Hossain, was arrested from Khakchara village in Pabna's Bera upazila during a raid last night (20 May) by a team from Rampura Police Station.
Earlier, the case's investigating officer, Rampura Police Station Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand for questioning.
The remand petition said preliminary investigation found evidence of the accused's involvement in the incident and that the investigation was ongoing.
It said police needed to question the accused further to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death, allegations of sexual abuse and whether anyone else was involved in the incident.
Following the hearing, the court granted a five-day remand.
However, no lawyer appeared for the accused during the hearing.
Police recovered the body of Md Abdullah, a student of Alokito Quran International Hifz Madrasah in Banasree's C-Block area under Rampura Police Station, from a washroom around 10pm on Tuesday (19 May).
The child was found hanging with a towel wrapped around his neck.
Police said the initial inquest report noted signs of possible sexual abuse and injuries on the victim's body.
During questioning, madrasah authorities told police about another student, Shihab, against whom similar allegations involving four other students had previously been raised.
Police said he went into hiding after Abdullah's death.
Following the incident, Abdullah's mother, Mst Tuku Ara Khatun, filed a case with Rampura Police Station against Shihab and several unidentified individuals.
