A Dhaka court today (8 January) placed Dhaka south city ward-56 Awami Jubo League Vice President Nazrul Islam Kabiraj on a three-day remand in a case lodged over the killing of Md Ali during student-led July-August mass uprising.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman passed the order as police produced Nazrul before the court and pleaded to put him on a seven-day remand in the case lodged with the Lalbagh Police Station.

Locals apprehended Nazrul Islam Kabiraj on 1 January and handed him over to the police.

According to the case documents, Md Ali joined an anti-discrimination student rally in the Azimpur Colony area on 19 July.

At around 4pm, police and Awami League cadres attacked the rally, opening fire indiscriminately at the protesters. Ali got shot in the attack.

People rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead.

The case was filed with Lalbagh Police Station on 30 December.
