Man sentenced to death in Ctg child rape and murder case
Rubel confessed that he had lured the child into an abandoned building with the promise of giving her a kitten where he raped her before killing the victim.
A Chattogram court today (20 July) sentenced a man to death for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in the city's Pahartali area.
The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 also sentenced the convict, Md Rubel, to life imprisonment and 10 years' rigorous imprisonment under separate charges, along with a fine of Tk5,000.
Judge Saifur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 of Chattogram pronounced the verdict today, confirmed Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Mahmudul Alam Chowdhury Maruf to The Business Standard.
According to the prosecution, Abida Sultana Ayni, 10, went missing on 21 March 2023 after leaving home in Chattogram's Kazir Dighi area to attend her class.
Eight days later, her mother filed a petition with the court, which ordered it to be treated as a first information report and assigned the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate.
Investigators arrested Rubel during the probe. Based on information he provided, PBI recovered the child's body, stuffed in a sack, from a waterbody near the Pukurpar Poultry Farm area on 29 March 2023.
During the investigation, Rubel confessed that he had lured the child into an abandoned building with the promise of giving her a kitten. He then raped and murdered her before concealing the body. He later gave a confessional statement before the court.
Following a thorough investigation, the PBI submitted a charge sheet on 18 July 2024. The court framed charges against the accused on 19 November of the same year to begin the trial. The recording of testimonies commenced on 10 January 2025.
The tribunal delivered the judgment after evaluating the evidence and recording testimonies from 24 witnesses.
