HC to hear writ challenging July Charter, Referendum legality on 1 March
Earlier, on 18 February, the writ was filed seeking directives to annul the July National Charter and to suspend its operation, alleging that it conflicts with constitutional provisions.
The High Court has set 1 March for hearing a writ petition seeking the cancellation of the 'July National Charter' and a declaration that it is contradictory with the Constitution.
The bench of Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury and Justice Md Ziaul Haque issued the order today (25 February). Advocate Yunus Ali Akhand appeared in court to represent the petitioner.
Earlier, on 18 February, the writ was filed seeking directives to annul the July National Charter and to suspend its operation, alleging that it conflicts with constitutional provisions.
The petition was filed in the public interest by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand. The Cabinet Secretary, Law Secretary, National Unity Commission, and the Chief Election Commission (CEC), among others concerned, were made respondents in the writ.
Advocate Yunus Ali Akhand, a Supreme Court lawyer, argued that the provisions of the July National Charter conflict with the existing constitutional framework of the country.
Meanwhile, a separate writ petition was filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the referendum held on 12 February and seeking cancellation of its results announced on 13 February.
The petition was filed in the public interest by Supreme Court lawyer ABM Ataul Majid Touhid. The chief election commissioner, cabinet secretary, and law secretary have been named as respondents in that writ as well.
