Upper house must be formed based on vote share under July Charter: Charmonai Pir
"If evidence of irregularities is found in any constituency, legal steps should be taken regarding the election in that seat,” he said.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, popularly known as Charmonai Pir, has called for the formation of an upper house in proportion to votes in line with the July National Charter.
"Forming the upper house proportionately based on votes under the July Charter is now a legal and moral obligation," he said last night (15 February) while addressing a post-election party review meeting.
Charmonai Pir further said that the July Charter was formulated after extensive discussions among all political parties and was signed with unanimous consent, reflecting the aspirations of the 2024 July Uprising.
He added that the people also endorsed the charter through a referendum.
Referring to complaints surrounding the election, he said allegations of various irregularities had surfaced in many constituencies. "Agents were forced out, tally sheets were altered, and votes were cancelled without valid reasons, among other complaints," he said.
The Charmonai Pir stressed that the allegations must be taken into consideration and investigated objectively to reveal the actual picture. "If evidence of irregularities is found in any constituency, legal steps should be taken regarding the election in that seat."
