Ex-PSC driver Abed Ali sent to jail in graft case
Earlier, on 15 January, the court had granted the ACC a three-day remand.
A Dhaka court today (22 January) sent Syed Abed Ali, a former driver of the Public Service Commission (PSC), to jail following a three-day remand in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Faiz passed the order after a hearing this evening.
Confirming the matter to the media, ACC Public Prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi said that the investigation officer, ACC Assistant Director Al-Amin, produced Abed Ali before the court and applied to keep him in jail custody. Subsequently, the judge granted the application.
Earlier, on 15 January, the court had granted the ACC a three-day remand to interrogate Abed Ali in connection with allegations of amassing wealth inconsistent with his known sources of income.
In the remand petition, the investigation officer said the ACC had filed the case against Syed Abed Ali, also known as Jibon, under the ACC Act and the Money Laundering Act after finding abnormal and suspicious banking transactions involving him and several other individuals, including government officials such as Md Zakaria Rahman.
The petition stated that investigators suspected Abed Ali's involvement in an organised question-leak syndicate and alleged that he maintained links with several government officials. It also claimed he helped secure jobs through unethical means.
The ACC sought the remand, saying intensive interrogation was necessary to recover crucial information and evidence.
Abed Ali was arrested on 8 July 2024 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over allegations of leaking questions from at least 30 recruitment examinations, including the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) test. Later, he was taken on remand in the ACC case.
