Court rejects ex-Somoy TV MD Zobayer's fresh bail plea in fraud case
Zobayer has been in jail since surrendering before a Dhaka court on 18 June after his initial bail plea was rejected.
A Dhaka court today (26 July) rejected a fresh bail petition filed by Ahmed Zobayer, former managing director of Somoy Television, in a case over allegations of fraud, criminal breach of trust and forgery.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rakibul Hasan rejected the bail petition after hearing arguments from defence counsel Farhad Hossain Niyon. Court bench assistant Md Alamgir Hossain confirmed the ruling.
According to the case statement, complainant Syed Asaduzzaman filed the case on 10 May against six people, including Zobayer, accusing them of fraud, criminal breach of trust and document forgery.

On the same day, the court issued a summons directing the accused to appear before it by 17 June. However, as none of them appeared on the scheduled date, the court subsequently issued arrest warrants against them.
On 18 June, Zobayer surrendered before the court, which rejected his bail petition and sent him to jail. He has remained in custody since then.
The other accused named in the arrest warrants are Zobayer's wife, Shamima Sultana Chowdhury, and their daughter, Saraf Nawar Joyita.
