Dismissed DGFI official Manjil placed on fresh 5-day remand in July Uprising killing case
Manjil was arrested on 9 April from the DOHS area in Mohakhali.
A Dhaka court has placed dismissed major Manjil Haider Chowdhury, a former official of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), on a fresh five-day remand in a case over the killing of businessman Abdul Wadud during the 2024 July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias passed the order today (16 April) following a petition by the investigating officer, Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq confirmed.
Earlier, after completing a seven-day remand in two phases, the accused was produced before the court, and investigators sought another seven days for further questioning.
The remand petition stated that during interrogation, the accused provided partial information regarding his involvement in activities related to the anti-discrimination movement suppression, financial assistance, procurement and use of weapons and ammunition, as well as details about named and unidentified fugitive co-accused.
It further argued that continued interrogation would help obtain complete information, enabling operations to arrest fugitive accused and recover weapons and ammunition.
On that basis, a further seven-day police remand was sought. The court, however, granted a five-day remand.
Manjil was arrested on 9 April from the DOHS area in Mohakhali. He was first placed on a four-day remand on 10 April.
On 14 April, the court granted another three-day remand before issuing the latest order.
According to the case statement, businessman Abdul Wadud was shot dead in front of Gate 1 of New Market in Dhaka at around 5pm on 19 July 2024.
The brother-in-law of the deceased, Abdur Rahman, filed a murder case against 130 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
