Ex-DGFI official Afzal Naser placed on fresh remand
So far, he has been remanded for a total of 28 days
A Dhaka court has ordered a fresh three-day remand for dismissed DGFI official Afzal Naser in connection with the murder of Mahmudul Hasan, under a case filed with Uttara East Police Station in the capital.
The order was issued today (27 April) by the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Zakir Hossain following a hearing.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashraful Alam of Uttara East Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
Upon consideration of the plea, the court granted a two-day remand, State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.
According to the remand petition, extensive acts of violence were carried out under his direction and financing during the anti-discrimination student movement.
It further stated that taking the accused on remand again is essential in the interest of a proper investigation and to uncover the main mystery behind the incident.
As per the case statement, on 5 August 2024, the victim, Mahmudul Hasan took part in a procession of the anti-discrimination student movement.
At around 4pm, when protesters reached the paved road beneath the Azampur foot overbridge on the eastern side of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway under Uttara East Police Station, the accused, along with unidentified individuals, allegedly opened fire while unlawfully armed, leaving Mahmudul Hasan with bullet injuries as he collapsed on the spot.
A murder case was subsequently filed by his family with the Uttara East Police Station.
Earlier, on 30 March, Afzal Naser was arrested from a residence on Road-12 in Mirpur DOHS by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Since then, he has been taken on remand in several phases in two separate murder cases filed with Mirpur Model and Paltan police stations.
So far, he has been remanded for a total of 28 days.
