David Emon granted fresh 5-day remand over Hathazari attack
Police say Tk50 lakh was demanded from businessman Jasim Uddin before his under-construction building in Hathazari was attacked and crude bombs were exploded.
A Chattogram court today (12 August) granted five more days of remand for Mobarak Hossain alias David Emon in a case filed over an attack and crude bomb explosions at a businessman's under-construction building in Hathazari.
Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Lokman Hakim passed the order after a hearing, said Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz.
Police sought Emon's remand for questioning over the attack and crude bomb explosions at the construction site in the Baradighi Par area of Hathazari, the police official said.
The court granted five days of remand following the hearing.
According to the case statement, the incident took place in July at the under-construction building of businessman Jasim Uddin in the Baradighi Par area.
Police said Tk50 lakh had allegedly been demanded from the businessman in extortion before the attack.
Jasim later filed a case with Hathazari Police Station over the incident.
Emon was brought to Chattogram court from the central jail this morning under tight security. Security was also strengthened around the court premises.
Police arrested Emon along with three associates in Jashore on the morning of 29 July while they were allegedly attempting to flee to India.
Police claim Emon is a close associate of fugitive criminal Sazzad Ali alias Boro Sazzad, who is currently abroad, and that 15 cases have been filed against Emon.
The day after his arrest, Emon was shown arrested in a murder case and an arms case filed with Fatikchhari Police Station.
A court subsequently granted 10 days of remand for questioning in those two cases.
According to police officials, Emon and Mohammad Raihan lead criminal activities in Chattogram on behalf of Boro Sazzad.
Police claim at least 50 shooters and associates are active under Boro Sazzad.
Police also allege that Emon regularly made phone calls demanding extortion money from businessmen, expatriates and various organisations.
According to police, Emon became involved in the criminal network through Boro Sazzad after 5 August 2024.
After Sazzad Hossain alias Chhoto Sazzad, an associate of Boro Sazzad, was arrested in Dhaka on 15 March last year, Emon became one of Boro Sazzad's closest associates, police said.
