The court has granted an application to show former Awami League lawmaker Momtaz Begum, Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League executive member Shahe Alam Murad, and two others as arrested in three separate cases linked to last year's July-August anti-discrimination movement.

The order was passed by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra today (30 June), following a hearing on applications submitted by investigating officers of the respective cases.

The other individuals shown arrested are former home secretary Jahangir Alam and former police superintendent of Noakhali commandant Md Asaduzzaman.

In the Dhanmondi Police Station case related to the death of 13-year-old Md Shamim, both Jahangir Alam and Shahe Alam Murad have been shown arrested.

Momtaz Begum has been shown arrested in the case filed at Kotwali Police Station over the death of Shaon Mufti.

Md Asaduzzaman has been shown arrested in the Jatrabari Police Station case concerning the death of Moinul Islam alias Mainuddin.

According to the case filed at Kotwali Police Station, on 5 August last year, Shaon Mufti was injured by gunfire during a demonstration at Tatibazar Mor and later died in hospital. The case was filed by his mother Maksuda Begum on 28 May this year, naming 57 individuals including Momtaz, who has been listed as the 14th accused in the FIR.

In the Dhanmondi case, Jahanara Begum filed a case on 3 October last year, alleging that her son, Md Shamim, was burnt during violence linked to the anti-discrimination protests at Dhanmondi 32 on 5 August. He was later declared dead at Suhrawardy Hospital.

A total of 128 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, were named in that FIR.

The Jatrabari Police Station case, filed by Kamrul Islam on 20 September last year, alleges that his son Moinul Islam was injured by gunfire on 21 July during a protest near Shonir Akhra Bridge last year. He later died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The FIR in this case lists 174 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as accused.

Momtaz Begum was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Dhanmondi on 12 May. Shahe Alam Murad was arrested on 17 April, as confirmed by the DB.
