16-year-old newlywed's death in Shyampur: Husband sent to jail in abetment case
The teenager’s mother accused her husband and three members of his family of verbally abusing and assaulting her after they married on 8 May.
A Dhaka court today (11 September) sent a man accused of abetting the suicide of his 16-year-old wife to jail after he completed a two-day remand.
The accused, Mohammad Rahat Hossain, was produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Siddiq Azad's court.
Shyampur Police Station Sub-Inspector Imam Hossain, also the investigation officer in the case, sought the order to keep Rahat in jail until the investigation is completed.

On 20 August, Rahat's wife Afra Khan was found unconscious at her in-laws' home in the capital's Shyampur area and was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where an on-duty doctor declared her dead after she was brought to the emergency department.
Afra's mother, Lucky Akter, filed the case with Shyampur Police Station on the same day, accusing Rahat and three members of his family -- his mother Sonia Akter, father Liton Bepari and elder brother Saif Hossain -- of abetting her daughter's suicide.
According to the case statement, Afra married Rahat through their families on 8 May. After the marriage, Rahat and the other accused allegedly verbally abused her over various issues and assaulted her when she protested. They also allegedly threatened, mentally tortured, and humiliated her, leaving her mentally distressed.
On 21 August, Rahat was arrested from his residence in the DIT Plot area of Shyampur and was sent to jail the following day.
On 8 September, the investigation officer sought seven days' remand for Rahat, but the court granted two days.
According to the investigation officer's application submitted to the court today, Rahat was questioned during the remand and allegedly gave investigators details of the incident. He was then asked to make a confessional statement before the court but was reluctant to do so.
The investigation team is verifying the information he provided, the application added.
Meanwhile, the three other accused - Sonia, Liton and Saif - surrendered before a court on 2 September and secured bail.
