'Shoot me dead instead of filing repeated cases': Misti Suvas breaks down in court

Misti Suvas, who was shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed with Ashulia Police Station, told a Dhaka court today (13 September), "Instead of filing cases against me again and again, shoot me dead."

She made the remarks during a hearing before Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Tajul Islam Sohag this afternoon.

Musammat Simu Akter Brishti alias Misti Suvas was brought to the court from jail. Shortly after noon, she was taken from the detention cell to the dock, where she reportedly fell ill, became dizzy and collapsed.

Police personnel took her back to the detention cell. She was later brought to the dock again after recovering.

During the hearing, she sought the judge's permission to speak and said she had gone to the National Martyrs' Memorial to lay flowers as the daughter of a freedom fighter.

"That cannot be a crime. A deep conspiracy is being hatched against me. Whenever I get bail, another case is filed against me. I have done nothing wrong. Instead of filing cases against me again and again, shoot me dead," she said.

Defence lawyer Golam Rabbani urged the court not to show her arrested in the case.

However, after the hearing, the court ordered that Misti Suvas be shown arrested in the case and sent her to jail.

Misti Suvas was arrested on 26 March this year while travelling to the National Martyrs' Memorial to lay flowers. She was subsequently shown arrested in four cases and has remained in jail since then.

According to the case statement, teenager Md Abir joined the anti-discrimination student movement at Baipayl intersection in Ashulia on 5 August 2024.

During the protest, armed members of the Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League allegedly attacked the protesters. Abir was seriously injured after being shot.

A case was filed with Ashulia Police Station on 31 October 2024 over the incident.
