Court orders wife of notorious criminal Sazzad to surrender in murder case
The High Court has directed Sharmin Akter Tamanna, wife of top criminal Sazzad Hossain, alias Chotto Sazzad, to surrender within four weeks to a judicial court in connection with a murder case in Chattogram.
The High Court bench, consisting of Justice Mohammad Mahbub Ul Alam and Justice Mohammad Hamidur Rahman, issued the order yesterday (9 April) after Tamanna filed a plea for anticipatory bail, a court official confirmed to The Business Standard.
Tamanna's lawyer, Tasnia Prodhan, represented her in the case.
Reports indicate that after Sazzad Hossain's arrest, his wife Sharmin Akter Tamanna made derogatory remarks about the country's legal and security agencies. She allegedly said that she could "buy" the court and bail with "stacks of money," a statement that went viral on social media platforms like Facebook.
In the video, Tamanna can be heard saying, "We have bundles of money, we will bring my husband back. Those responsible for this incident will not be spared."
The case gained further traction after a double murder occurred in Chattogram following the arrest of Sazzad.
On 30 March, two individuals were killed in a shooting incident on the Bakalia Access Road in the city. Police believe the attack was connected to a rivalry between Sazzad Hossain and terrorist Sarwar Hossain.
It is suspected that Sazzad's followers attacked Sarwar's associates in retaliation for Sazzad's arrest.
On 1 April, Firoza Begum, the mother of one of the victims, Bakhtiar Hossain Manik, filed a case at the Bakalia police station. The case named Sazzad Hossain and his wife Tamanna Sharmin as defendants.
In addition to this, Sazzad is currently in police custody in a murder case involving Aftab Uddin, a brick and sand trader from Chandgaon, and has been remanded in custody.
Sazzad, known for his violent criminal activities, was captured on 15 March in a shopping mall in Dhaka, after being on the run. Prior to this, the city police commissioner had announced a reward for information leading to his arrest.
Earlier in January, Sazzad had publicly threatened the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bayezid Bostami police station via Facebook Live. He has multiple criminal cases against him, including 15 related to murder and arms possession.
