Banned Chhatra League ex-GS Ajoy Kar shown arrested in July Uprising murder case
The court accepted the police petition after investigators said witness statements and evidence linked the former Chhatra League leader to the killing of Md Nazmul Mia during the July Uprising.
A Dhaka court today (3 August) ordered that former general secretary of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, Ajoy Kar Khokon, be shown arrested in a murder case over the killing of Md Nazmul Mia during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the investigation officer of the case.
Md Mizanur Rahman, sub-inspector of the prosecution division, confirmed the matter.

Police had filed the application on 30 July, with the hearing held today in Ajoy Kar's presence.
According to the petition, investigators found evidence of Ajoy Kar's involvement through witness statements and other findings during the investigation.
Police argued that he should remain in custody to prevent any threat to public safety.
Lawyers for the accused, including Obaidul Islam, Shamim Al Sohag Saiful and Zakir Hossain, opposed the petition, while the prosecution supported it.
After hearing both sides, the court granted the application.
Following the order, defence lawyer Obaidul Islam said Ajoy Kar has now been shown arrested in three separate cases. He alleged that the latest order was contrary to a High Court directive barring authorities from showing his client arrested in new cases.
According to the case statement, Awami League leaders and activists launched armed attacks in Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur and Lalmatia on 4 August 2024 in an attempt to suppress the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The case alleges that attackers hurled crude bombs and opened fire near Dhanmondi Hawkers Market at around noon, fatally shooting Md Nazmul Mia. He was declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
A colleague of the victim later filed the murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station, naming several accused along with 400 to 500 unidentified individuals.
Ajoy Kar was arrested in Dhaka's Gulshan on 23 September 2025 in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and has remained in jail since.
