Kathak Das placed on 3-day remand in Ctg acid attack case

A Chattogram court today (17 February) placed Dr Kathak Das on a three-day remand in a case filed over an acid attack on law enforcement officers.
The Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the order this afternoon in the presence of the accused, Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury told The Business Standard.
"The investigation officer had sought a 10-day remand, but the court granted three days after the hearing," he said.
The acid attack incident occurred on 5 November last year in Chattogram's Hazari Lane following tensions over a social media post related to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The post led to unrest in the area, during which ISKCON followers allegedly confined a shopkeeper. When law enforcement officers, including police and military personnel, attempted to intervene, they were attacked with acid, injuring at least 12 people, including five army members.
Following the incident, security forces launched an operation in Hazari Lane and arrested 53 individuals. Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of Kotwali Police Station filed a case in this connection, naming 49 suspects and listing 500-600 unidentified individuals as accused.
Kathak Das, 40, is an ophthalmologist specialising in micro, laser, and phaco surgery at Lions Charitable Eye Hospital and a consultant at Bangladesh Eye Hospital. He is reportedly affiliated with various Sanatan religious organisations and is known as a follower of former ISKCON organiser Chinmoy Krishna Das.
On 5 February, immigration police detained Kathak Das at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka while he was preparing to leave for the United Kingdom. The next day, he was transferred to Chattogram and shown arrested in a sedition case filed with Kotwali Police Station. Police interrogated him under a two-day remand following a court order.
The sedition case against Kathak and 18 others, including Chinmoy Krishna Das, was filed on 30 November 2024, by a local BNP leader named Firoz, alleging dishonor to the national flag. Chinmoy Krishna Das remains in custody in connection with the same case.
