'Choto Sajjad', wife shown arrested in madrasa student murder case in Ctg
The court order comes just days after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, on 17 December, stayed the bail orders previously granted to "Choto Sajjad" and his wife in several other murder cases
A Chattogram court today (22 December) ordered to show Sajjad Hossain, a top-listed criminal better known as "Choto Sajjad," and his wife Tamanna Sharmin arrested in a case over the killing of a madrasa student during the July Uprising.
Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique passed the order after a hearing. Sajjad and Tamanna joined the proceedings virtually from Rajshahi and Feni jails, respectively.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury confirmed the development to The Business Standard, stating that the court granted the application filed by the case's investigating officer of Chattogram's Kotwali Police Station.
According to the case documents, 21-year-old madrasa student Md Nizamuddin was shot dead on 5 August last year during a student-people uprising in the city's Laldighi Paar area. The case alleges that armed cadres of the then-ruling Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League opened fire on the demonstrators at around 2pm.
Nizamuddin was rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where he was declared dead. His father, Sahabuddin, subsequently filed a murder case naming several individuals, including Sajjad.
String of cases
The court order comes just days after the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, on 17 December, stayed the bail orders previously granted to "Choto Sajjad" and his wife in seven other murder cases.
The High Court had granted them bail in September, a development that caused widespread outcry when the orders reached Chattogram Central Jail last week.
Police records indicate that Sajjad is a high-profile criminal listed by the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, with a total of 19 cases against him, including 10 for murder. His wife, Tamanna, faces eight criminal cases, including multiple murder charges.
Sajjad was arrested on 15 March this year at a shopping mall in Dhaka after a long-standing pursuit by law enforcement. Tamanna was apprehended on 10 May in connection with a double murder in the Chattogram's Bakalia area.
Despite securing bail in several cases recently, the couple remains in custody due to the mounting number of fresh charges and the stay orders from the apex court.
