'Choto Sajjad' granted bail in 3 more murder cases; release remains uncertain
However, his release from prison remains uncertain as several other cases against him are still pending.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police's listed top criminal Sajjad Hossain alias "Choto Sajjad" has secured bail from the High Court in three more murder cases.
However, his release from prison remains uncertain as several other cases against him are still pending.
Confirming the matter today (17 December), Chattogram Central Jail Superintendent Shah Syed Sharif told the Business Standard that the latest bail orders reached the jail last week. "Sajjad has now secured bail in a total of seven murder cases. Despite this, he cannot be freed due to other ongoing cases."
He added, "Sajjad is currently held at Rajshahi Jail, where the bail documents have been forwarded."
Court data shows that of the seven murder cases in which Sajjad was granted bail, four were filed with Chandgaon Police Station and three with Panchlaish Model Police Station. The cases stemmed from violence linked to the July movement and incidents under the Explosives Act.
Following a police petition, a Chattogram court on 15 December ordered to show Sajjad arrested in two fresh cases filed with Chandgaon Police Station. The court also ordered to show his wife, Tamanna Sharmin, arrested in the same cases.
Assistant Public Prosecutor of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury said, "The cases relate to incidents during the July Uprising, including the killing of Fazle Rabbi in an attack allegedly carried out by leaders and activists of the now-banned Chhatra League and Jubo League in the Bahaddarhat area, as well as clashes in front of the residence of city BNP convener Ershad Ullah."
According to police and court sources, Sajjad is accused in a total of 19 cases, including 10 murder cases. His wife also faces eight cases, including multiple murder charges. Both were granted bail in four murder cases by the High Court in September, though the orders reached the Chattogram court only later.
Sajjad was arrested by police from the Bashundhara City Shopping Mall in Dhaka on 15 March. Later, on 10 May, Tamanna Sharmin was arrested in connection with a double murder in the Bakalia area. She is currently held at Feni Jail.
