Amid speculation over Benazir's release in Dubai, police say they have no information

Amid speculation over former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed's reported release on bail from a prison in Dubai, police authorities in Dhaka today (2 August) said they have no information regarding the matter.
A Dubai court granted Benazir's bail petition on 27 July, according to reports published by a section of the media.
He was reportedly released from custody on 30 July after completing the required legal formalities.

Asked about the reports, Assistant Inspector General (Media) at Police Headquarters AHM Shahadat Hossain told The Business Standard, "We have no information on the matter. The ministry [concerned] and the relevant authorities will be able to comment."
A source familiar with the matter told The Business Standard that the Dubai court imposed several conditions on Benazir's release.
"His passport will remain in the custody of the court and he will not be allowed to leave the UAE without permission. Although he has been released on bail, restrictions on his travel remain in force," the source said.
According to sources familiar with the proceedings, the court heard arguments from both sides on the extradition documents submitted by the Bangladesh government and the related legal procedures before granting Benazir conditional bail.
However, the Dubai authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the matter.
Former police chief Benazir is facing multiple cases in Bangladesh over allegations including corruption, illicit wealth accumulation and money laundering. The cases remain under judicial proceedings.
