1 held with foreign pistol, yaba in Ctg; 16 others arrested in separate drives

The Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has detained a man with a foreign pistol, ammunition and 600 yaba tablets during a drive in the city's Bakalia area, while 16 others were arrested in separate operations.

According to separate press releases issued by the CMP today (1 August), acting on a tip-off, the Detective Branch of CMP detained Md Sohel, 31, from the Moidar Mill intersection in Miakhan Nagar under Bakalia Police Station at around 6:50pm yesterday.

During questioning, Sohel told police that yaba tablets were kept in a dressing table drawer and a foreign-made pistol with ammunition was hidden in a steel wardrobe at his rented apartment.

Based on the information, detectives raided his third-floor apartment at JK Tower in the same area and recovered 600 yaba tablets weighing 60 grams from an iPhone box inside the dressing table drawer.

Police also seized a magazine-loaded foreign-made pistol and one round of 7.65mm ammunition from the wardrobe. Legal action has been initiated against the detainee, the CMP said.

In a separate drive in the Kotwali Police Station area today, police arrested Md Sohel, 28, and Ashraful, 20, with 1,050 grams of cannabis. A case has been filed against them under the Narcotics Control Act.

Police also arrested Mehedi Islam, 22, who was identified during the investigation of a robbery preparation case, and Shahanur, a long-time fugitive wanted in a narcotics case.

In addition, 12 people were arrested under the CMP Ordinance for suspicious movement in the Goalpara area under Kotwali Police Station.

CMP said all those arrested have been produced before the court after completion of the necessary legal procedures.
