NBR considers further extension of tax return submission deadline
NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan said that so far 26 lakh taxpayers have submitted their tax returns online, although 42 Lakh have registered for online return submission, a figure lower than last year.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is considering extending the deadline for submitting income tax returns for 15 days to one month, beyond 31 December, as the expected number of returns has not yet been filed, according to relevant sources at the NBR.
However, even if the deadline is extended, the announcement may come after a few more days.
Speaking to The Business Standard (TBS) on condition of anonymity, a senior official of the NBR's income tax wing said, "Discussions are ongoing regarding the extension of the deadline, but no final decision has been made yet."
The official added, "Even if a decision is taken, it may be announced toward the end of the month."
Earlier, at a discussion meeting organised by the Dhaka Reporters Unity in Segunbagicha in the capital yesterday (21 December), NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan said in this regard, "The government will make a decision on this matter if it deems it appropriate."
At that time, he said that so far 26 lakh taxpayers have submitted their tax returns online, although 42 Lakh have registered for online return submission.
According to NBR data, around 45 lakh tax returns were filed last year. Compared to that figure, the number of returns submitted so far this year remains lower.
