Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus visited Evercare Hospital this evening (3 December) to inquire about the health of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who is undergoing treatment there.
The chief adviser spent about half an hour at the hospital, where he urged Khaleda Zia's family, party leaders, and activists to remain patient, said a statement issued by the Chief Adviser's Press Wing.
The chief adviser assured the family of full government support and called on the nation to pray for Khaleda Zia's speedy recovery.
During the visit, Khaleda Zia's medical team briefed him on her condition, explaining that she is receiving treatment under the supervision of specialist doctors from Mount Sinai and Johns Hopkins in the United States, as well as medical experts from the United Kingdom, China, and other countries.
National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman accompanied the chief adviser during the hospital visit.
Earlier, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir received the chief adviser at 7:07pm and escorted him directly to the ailing chairperson, said Shairul Kabir Khan, member of BNP Media Cell.
Khaleda Zia's personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain and Dr Shahabuddin Talukder were also present at that time, he added.
Security has been tightened around Evercare Hospital since Khaleda Zia's admission. Members of the Special Security Force (SSF), Presidential Guard Regiment (PGR), police and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed.
The hospital's main gate has been reinforced with barbed-wire barricades, restricting public movement in the area.
Khaleda Zia, has been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital since 23 November with multiple health complications.
She was moved to the CCU on 27 November after her condition deteriorated.
Yesterday, her personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said the medical board, comprising local and foreign specialists, confirmed that Khaleda Zia is responding to ongoing treatment and that there is a possibility she may recover this time.
The government on Monday officially declared the ailing BNP chief a Very Very Important Person (VVIP) under Section 2(a) of the Special Security Force (SSF) Act, 2021. With its notification taking immediate effect, she now qualifies for state-provided close protection by the SSF, the same elite security unit that protects the president and the head of government (prime minister or chief adviser, as applicable).
The former prime minister has long been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, and kidney, lung, heart and eye problems.
Khaleda travelled to London on 8 January this year. Upon arrival, she was admitted to the London Clinic, a private hospital, where she remained under the care of renowned specialists Professor Patrick Kennedy and Professor Jennifer Cross for 17 days.
From 25 January, she received treatment at the residence of her elder son, Tarique Rahman.
The BNP chief then returned home on 6 May after four months of treatment in London.
