Several heavyweight candidates and high-profile figures have suffered unexpected defeats across various constituencies, according to unofficial results from the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
While some contests were decided by razor-thin margins, other prominent aspirants faced crushing losses in yesterday's (12 February) election, highlighted by a strong performance by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Notable candidates who were widely discussed but ultimately failed to secure victory include Mia Golam Parwar, Mohammad Nasiruddin Patwary, Sarjis Alam, Tasnim Zara, Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, Mahmudur Rahman Manna and Mohammad Shishir Monir.
Jamaat-e-Islami candidate and the party's Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has been defeated in the Khulna-5 constituency. Contesting with the "Scales" symbol, he secured 146246 votes while his rival, BNP candidate Mohammad Ali Asgar (Lobi), won the seat with 1,48854 votes – a narrow margin of just 2,608 votes.
In Dhaka-13, Mamunul Haque, contesting with the Scales symbol, received 86,067 votes, where BNP candidate Bobby Hajjaj secured 88,387 votes, winning by a margin of 2,320 votes.
In Bogura-2, Nagorik Oikya's President Mahmudur Rahman Manna received only 3,426 votes.
In Khulna-1 constituency, Krishna Nandi, a candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami, has been defeated by a wide margin. Krishna received 70,346 votes in the electoral contest, where BNP contender Amir Ejaz Khan secured 1,21,352 votes.
In Dhaka-9, independent candidate Tasnim Zara, contesting with the Football symbol, received 44,684 votes, where Habibur Rashid from BNP received 1,11,212 votes.
In Panchagarh-1, Jamaat-NCP alliance candidate Md Sarjis Alam, who contested with the "Shapla koli" symbol, was defeated, while BNP candidate Barrister Mohammad Nawshad Zamir, contesting with the "Sheaf of paddy" symbol, was unofficially elected.
In Dhaka-8, NCP's Mohammad Nasiruddin Patwary received a total of 54,127 votes, where BNP's Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed secured 59,366 votes.
In Sunamganj-2, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Shishir Monir was also defeated by BNP candidate Nasir Uddin Chowdhury.
Islamic Front candidate Md Gias Uddin Taheri, an Islamic speaker, suffered a heavy defeat in Habiganj-4 constituency. He lost to the BNP-nominated candidate SM Faisal.
In Barishal-3, another prominent candidate, Asaduzzaman Bhuiyan (Barrister Fuad) of the AB Party, was defeated. He lost to BNP candidate Zainul Abedin.
