HC orders seizure of Cumilla-11, Mymensingh-2 ballots, documents over rigging
The Election Tribunal of the High Court today (9 March) ordered the Election Commission to seize the ballot papers and result sheets of Cumilla-11 and Mymensingh-2 seats over allegations of vote rigging in the 13th national election.
HC Justice Md Zakir Hossain passed the order after hearing two separate petitions submitted by the aggrieved BNP candidates from the seats.
Kamrul Huda, the BNP-backed candidate for Cumilla-11, filed an application challenging the victory of Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, the nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Mymensingh-2's BNP candidate Motahar Hossain Talukder submitted another application with the tribunal demanding a recount of the votes as Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis's candidate Muhammadullah was declared elected there.
The BNP candidates presented several pieces of documentary evidence and claimed that the results were prepared using the signatures of polling agents from other parties on result sheets in the names of BNP candidates' agents at different centres.
The 13th parliamentary election was held on 12 February, in which the BNP secured a landslide victory and its Chairman Tarique Rahman became the prime minister of the country.
The Jamaat-e-Islami has formed the opposition in parliament as the party alone secured 68 seats.
