EC warns of strict action if vote-buying allegations proven
The statement comes against the backdrop of incidents reported throughout the day, where several Jamaat leaders were detained by locals in several districts allegedly with large sum of cash
The Election Commission (EC) has said it will take strict action if evidence of vote buying is found anywhere in the country.
In a press release issued around 9pm tonight (11 February), the commission said a political party alleged that vote buying was taking place in different areas ahead of the polls.
Responding to the claims, the commission stated that vote buying is a punishable offence under the law. It warned that anyone found involved in such activities would face strict legal action.
The statement comes against the backdrop of incidents reported throughout the day, where several Jamaat-e-Islami leaders were detained by locals in several districts allegedly with cash.
Earlier in the day, Belal Uddin, the ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami's Thakurgaon district unit, was detained with Tk74 lakh in cash at Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari.
In Cumilla's Muradnagar, locals claimed to have recovered Tk2 lakh from a Jamaat leader's vehicle, while in Sirajganj's Kamarkhand, a video circulating on social media showed another leader allegedly distributing money.
Meanwhile, a Jamaat activist was arrested with over Tk7 lakh during a joint force operation in Naria upazila of Shariatpur.
Jamaat leaders, however, denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated and fabricated.
