35% voter turnout in Sylhet till 2pm: Returning officer
No untoward incidents were reported anywhere in Sylhet till the afternoon
Sylhet recorded a 35% voter turnout as of 2pm today (12 February), according to Returning Officer and Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam.
He stated that voting began at 7:30am this morning in six constituencies of Sylhet. After six and a half hours of polling, 35% of votes had been cast.
He also stated that no untoward incidents had been reported anywhere in Sylhet up to the afternoon and no complaints had been received.
However, visits to at least 15 polling centres in Sylhet city since morning showed low voter presence in most centers, except a few. Several centres were seen nearly empty.
In contrast, higher voter turnout was observed at centers located in tea garden areas and minority dominated neighborhoods.
Around 1:30pm, Presiding Officer of Nabin Chandra Government Primary School polling center in the Shibganj area, Tofayel Ahmed Chowdhury, said, "887 votes had been cast out of a total of 3,270 registered voters."
Around 2pm, Presiding officer of the women's center at MC College, Md. Saifuddin reported that 959 votes had been cast out of 3,562 registered voters."
Arpita Deb, a voter at this center, said the voting environment was good.
"There was no crowd at the center. I was able to cast my vote easily," she added.
