OC Saiful told The Business Standard that police had visited the scene and launched an investigation
A Jubo Dal leader was shot dead in broad daylight in Chattogram's Raozan today (13 June), triggering protests and a blockade on the Chattogram-Kaptai road.
Masudul Haque Chowdhury, 45, senior joint convener of Rangunia upazila Jubo Dal, was killed after unidentified assailants opened fire on him at Pahartali Mor in Raozan around 1:30pm, said Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Islam.
The deceased was a resident of Betagi union in Rangunia and the younger brother of Betagi Union Parishad Chairman Shafiul Alam Swapan.
Witnesses said the attackers shot Masudul in the head while he was at the intersection, leaving him dead on the spot. The assailants fled immediately after the attack.
OC Saiful told The Business Standard that police had visited the scene and launched an investigation.
"It is not yet clear who carried out the killing or what the motive was. We are investigating the matter," he said.
He added that the body had been sent to hospital for an autopsy after completion of the inquest report and that legal action would be taken.
Following the killing, leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations staged protests in Pahartali and the Ishakhali area of Rangunia. According to locals, demonstrators set tyres on fire and blocked the Chattogram-Kaptai road, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible, a fair trial, and exemplary punishment.
The blockade temporarily halted traffic on the route, causing long tailbacks on both sides of the road and disrupting commuters.
Members of law enforcement agencies have been deployed in the area to maintain order, police said.
