West Indies thrash Bangladesh by record margin after piling up runs

Bangladesh suffered a crushing 106-run defeat against West Indies in the second T20I at Warner Park in St Kitts on 25 January, marking their second-heaviest loss by runs in this format.

The hosts, powered by explosive batting performances from Kiana Joseph and Deandra Dottin, posted a record total of 201 for 6, leaving Bangladesh with no chance in the chase.

In response, the visitors managed only 95 for 9 in their 20 overs, handing West Indies their biggest victory by runs in T20Is and sealing the series with a match to spare.

Bangladesh had lost the first T20I by a significant margin as well, but at least they had shown some fight in that game. This time, there was no resistance. As West Indies' batters unleashed a brutal assault, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty might have quickly realised that choosing to bowl first was a mistake—a realisation that must have only grown stronger as the innings unfolded.

After losing the toss, West Indies put on a dominant batting display, with Kiana and Dottin tearing apart Bangladesh's bowlers. Their 201 for 6 made them the first team to score 200 against Bangladesh in a T20I and also set a new record as West Indies' highest total in the format, surpassing their previous best of 191 against New Zealand in 2010.

Bangladesh never looked comfortable in the chase, with opener Sharmin Akhter Supta top-scoring with just 22 off 25 balls. Only three other batters reached double figures—captain Nigar made 10, Swarna Akter scored 16, and Lata Mondal contributed 13. West Indies' bowlers shared the wickets, with Cherry-Ann Fraser, Afy Fletcher, and captain Hayley Matthews each taking two, while Zaida James and Asmini Munisar claimed one apiece.

Despite their massive total, West Indies had only one half-century in the innings. Opener Kiana was relentless, smashing 63 off 36 balls with nine fours and two sixes. Dottin, after scoring a half-century in the previous match, was even more destructive, hammering an unbeaten 49 off just 20 balls, hitting three fours and five sixes. Hayley chipped in with 27, Jenilia made 14, and Sabika added 24.

Among Bangladesh's bowlers, leg-spinner Fahima Khatun was the most successful, picking up three wickets. Fellow leg-spinners Rabeya Khan and Swarna Akter took two and one wicket, respectively.
