Bangladesh captain Litton Das has apologised to supporters after the team failed to qualify for the Asia Cup final. The apology came today through a post on his social media handle.
Bangladesh had set their sights on winning the continental tournament this time. After losing to Sri Lanka in the group stage in Abu Dhabi, wicketkeeper–batter Jaker Ali said, "We came here to become champions. One defeat does not mean hope is gone."
Bangladesh eventually made it past the group stage and into the Super Four. There, in an unofficial semi-final against Pakistan, they suffered an 11-run defeat. Despite excellent bowling, poor batting meant Bangladesh could not chase down Pakistan's modest total of 135. Pakistan reached the final but lost to India, finishing as runners-up.
Overall, the Asia Cup ended in disappointment for Bangladesh. Adding to the frustration for fans was Litton's absence in key matches. He picked up an injury before the Super Four match against India and missed both that game and the unofficial semi-final against Pakistan. Jaker Ali captained Bangladesh in those two fixtures.
In today's Facebook post, Litton apologised to the fans, saying:
"In Asia Cup 2025, we gave our best as a team. Playing in the final and winning it was our ultimate goal. Unfortunately, we could not achieve that. As a team, we sincerely apologise to all Bangladesh supporters."
Addressing his personal setback, he added:
"On a personal note, not being able to play the last two matches due to injury was deeply painful. For the same reason, I will also miss the upcoming Afghanistan series. I tried my utmost to recover but couldn't—it will hurt me for a long time."
Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series in Sharjah starting this Thursday. That will be followed by a three-match ODI series against the same opponents in Abu Dhabi from 8 October. In Litton's absence, Jaker Ali will captain the T20I side.
Litton ended his post by thanking fans and promising to repay their support:
"Finally, I want to extend heartfelt thanks to every fan for the overwhelming support throughout the tournament. As players, we are truly fortunate because we have the best supporters in the world. I hope we can soon give you back what you deserve."
