DJ Sanjoy showcases Bangladeshi heritage at Fifa World Cup opening ceremony in Toronto

Bangladeshi-born LA-based DJ and music producer Sanjoy brought a touch of Bangladesh to the Fifa World Cup 2026 opening ceremony in Toronto, Canada, on Friday (12 June) with a performance that quickly drew attention both at home and abroad.
Taking the stage alongside Nora Fatehi and Vegedream for their song "SIIR SIIR", Sanjoy wore a maroon suit featuring embroidered motifs inspired by Bangladesh.
The design incorporated national symbols such as the Bengal tiger, the water lily (shapla) and a red circle representing the country's flag.
During the performance, he repeatedly gestured towards the embroidered sleeves, a moment many viewers interpreted as a tribute to his roots.
The appearance was widely celebrated on social media, with musicians and celebrities sharing clips from the show and congratulating him on the achievement.
Sanjoy later posted footage of the performance on Facebook, writing, "My People. This is just the start of something beautiful."
Born in Sreemangal and raised in Chattogram before relocating to the United States, Sanjoy has frequently spoken about the influence of his multicultural upbringing on his music.
He also credits his family's musical heritage, especially his mother and grandmother, for shaping his artistic journey.
