Teenager beaten to death for talking with a female friend

A teenager was publicly beaten to death over a trivial matter on Eid day at Golbuniya Blockyard in Barguna. The incident went viral on social media.

The deceased has been identified as Hridoy. He was the only son of a rickshaw puller named Delowar Hossain and lived in a rented house in the Char colony area of Barguna.

Local people said that Hridoy and his friends went for a walk together in the Blockyard area on the banks of the Payra river on Eid day. He met a female friend there and was speaking to her.

They said a native of that locality named Noyon and his companions made comments about Hridoy and his friend, and Hridoy protested.

On condition of anonymity, an eyewitness said, "After a little while, Noyon, Helal, Abir, Tonik, Noman and their gang came with sticks and started beating-up Hridoy, who lost consciousness at one stage due to the severe blows."

He was first taken to Barguna Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in critical condition. The doctor declared him dead after he was brought to Barishal Hospital.

Mithun Roy, a friend of Hridoy said, Hridoy met a female friend at the yard. When Hridoy was talking to her, Noyon, Helal, Noman and their gang made lewd comments, Hridoy protested, and after a while 10 or 15 people came and attacked him. They fled after Hridoy fainted.

Hridoy's mother Firoja Begum said that they had had a conflict with Helal from before, and that maybe their only son Hridoy was killed in the continuity of that enmity.

Abir Mohammad, Officer in Charge of Barguna Sadar Police Station said, "We are trying to catch the accused."
