A Barguna court today (27 April) sentenced a man to death in a case filed for attempting to rape a woman after killing two children in 2023.

The convict was identified as Md Ilias, 34.

The court also sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment and fined Tk2 lakh.

Barguna Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Begum Lailatul Ferdous handed down the punishment.

According to the prosecution, the convict entered into the house of the woman, aged about 30 and mother of three-year-old Taifa on August 4, 2023.

Later, he attempted to rape the woman. When Taifa and Hafizul, 10, a relative of the woman, who tried to resist and raised an alarm, Ilias attacked them with a machete, killing Hafizul on the spot and injuring two others.
They were taken to Barguna Sadar Hospital where the doctors referred Taifa to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital but she died on the way to the hospital.

Police arrested Ilias and submitted a chargesheet against him.
