Three cases have been lodged over an angry mob vandalising and setting fire to a number of buses at the capital's Rampura after SSC exam candidate Mainuddin Islam Durjoy was run over by a bus and killed on Monday.

Police filed two cases on Tuesday – one with Rampura police station, accusing 400-500 unnamed people, and another with Hatirjheel police station, accusing 250-300 people – over vandalism and arson attacks.

Durjoy's mother Rasheda Begum filed a murder case with Rampura police station.

One of the police cases states that some 400-500 people teamed up before vandalising and torching seven buses, causing a loss of nearly Tk48 lakh.

Rampura police arrested and filed a case against one Shahidul Bepari, 22, under the explosives act, and remanded him in police custody for a day, according to Touhidul Islam, sub-inspector of Rampura police station and investigating officer of the case.

"We will know more after the interrogation," he said.

The other case, filed with Hatirjheel police, states that unruly students and mobs were trying to destabilise normal situation of the country by vandalising and setting fire to buses with petrol bombs.

Police are trying to nab the suspects, the case statement added.

Meanwhile, Rashida Begum filed the case under the Safe Roads Act with Rampura police station on Tuesday over his son's tragic death.

Rampura Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam said locals beat the Anabil Paribahan bus driver Sohel before handing him over to the police.

On Tuesday morning the Rapid Action Battalion arrested the helper of the killer bus.

During a briefing at the Secretariat yesterday, Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud claimed that a section was trying to create chaos in the country by relying on the student movement for safe roads.

He questioned how it was streamed live from two Facebook pages within 15 minutes of the incident.

"How did the 'Nirapod Sarak Chai' page admin reach the place of occurrence in 12 minutes? How did 'Basher Kella' get this news in 15 minutes and livestreamed it from there? Ten to twelve buses were set on fire within only 15 minutes of the accident," the information minister said.

"The government is sympathetic to the students' movement," Hasan Mahmud said before questioning whether the incident in Rampura was really an accident or pre-planned.
