A CCTV camera footage circulating on Facebook today (22 July) has showed how the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) fighter aircraft nosedived and crashed after suffering a technical malfunction.
The footage, timestamped around 1:12pm yesterday, captures the jet in flight before suddenly descending. Within 10 seconds, thick black smoke is seen billowing into the sky.
The BAF aircraft, which was on a training flight, crashed into the Diabari campus premises of Milestone College in Dhaka's Uttara area yesterday afternoon (21 July), killing as of now 31 people, mostly children, and leaving more than 170 people injured.
However, students who witnessed the incident and helped first responders at the beginning have claimed that the death toll is much higher than what has been officially announced.
A high-level investigation committee of the Air Force was formed yesterday immediately after the crash to find out the cause of the accident.
The nation is today observing a one-day state mourning over the deaths and injuries in the tragic crash.
The government has postponed today's HSC and equivalent examinations and all the examinations under the National University following the crash.
