Drizzle lashes Dhaka over ‘Yaas’ impact

After days full of torturous heatwaves, the city residents have breathed a sigh of relief as drizzling along with moderate wind has swept the capital on Monday night.

The rainy weather is a byproduct of cyclone Yaas, due to land on the coastal areas on the day after tomorrow. Other major cities, including Chattogram, Barishal, Khulna, have also experienced light to moderate rainfall on the day. 

In Dhaka, the shower began around 9:30 pm bringing comforts to the city dwellers and continued until filing of this report around 10:20 pm. 

Meteorologists have forecast that cyclonic storm Yaas will make landfall on 26 May early morning. 

On Monday evening, the cyclonic storm was lying over the East Central Bay and the adjoining area and was moving towards north-northwestwards at a speed of 7km per hour.

Gaining more strength, it is supposed to turn into a strong cyclone in the next 12 hours and super strong cyclone in the next 24 hours.

At 6pm, it was centered at 655 kms south-southwest of Chattogram port, 590 kms south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 630 kms south of Mongla port and 585 kms south of Payra port, according to the latest met office bulletin.

Due to favourable atmospheric conditions, the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify further and move in a north-northwesterly direction and may reach North-West Bay off North Odisha-West Bengal-Khulna coast by 26 May early morning.

However, the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Parya were asked to continue hoisting distant warning signal-2.

All fishing boats and trawlers of North Bay and deep see were advised to take shelter and remain there until further notice.
