Fire at Matarbari power plant brought under control after 2 hours
Although the fire was not immediately extinguished, the area was made safe from further risk, the fire service said
A fire that broke out at a scrap storage area of the Matarbari coal-fired power plant in Cox's Bazar's Moheshkhali was brought under control after about two hours.
The fire started at around 9:15pm yesterday (12 January), and was brought under control at around 11:15pm, said Ram Prasad Sen, officer-in-charge of the Moheshkhali Fire Service and Civil Defence station.
Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rushed to the spot soon after receiving the information and began efforts to douse the blaze. Two fire service units were deployed, while the power plant's own fire control staff also took part in the operation.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Moheshkhali Fire Service and Civil Defence In-Charge Salahuddin Kader Chowdhury said the fire suddenly broke out in a pile of abandoned waste at the power plant at night, and the flames spread rapidly.
"After being informed by the power plant authorities, two fire service units reached the spot and started working to bring the blaze under control. Alongside them, the power plant's own fire control staff were also engaged in the operation," he said.
Although the fire was not immediately extinguished, the area was made safe from further risk, the fire service said.
The cause of the fire could not be confirmed immediately, and the Fire Service could not provide details of losses or damage from the incident, according to bdnews24.
No casualties were reported so far.
