Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood has been admitted to the coronary care unit (CCU) of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital and Research Institute in Dhaka.
He was taken to the hospital's emergency department around 10:30pm today (1 September) and was later admitted to the CCU, Tanvir Hossain, a cash account officer at the hospital, confirmed to The Business Standard.
Further details about his condition were not immediately available.
Mahmood, a senior BNP leader, was first elected to parliament from Sirajganj-2 as a Jatiya Party candidate in 1986 and was re-elected in 1988. Following the fall of Hussain Muhammad Ershad in 1990, he joined the BNP.
He was again elected from Sirajganj-2 in the 2001 general election and served as state minister for power from October 2001 to May 2006 in the Khaleda Zia-led government. He subsequently served as state minister for agriculture from May to October 2006.
Mahmood was appointed to the BNP National Standing Committee in June 2019.
He returned to parliament from Sirajganj-2 in the 2026 general election and was sworn in as minister for power, energy and mineral resources on 17 February 2026 in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's cabinet.
