A Narayanganj court today (17 August) sentenced three snatchers to death for the murder of Wazed Alam Simanto, a student of the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), who was stabbed during a robbery attempt in the city.
Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad pronounced the verdict today (17 August) in the presence of the accused, Anik, Akash Khan and Chandi Babu, confirmed Advocate Najibullah Bipu, counsel for the prosecution.
Bipu said he is satisfied with the verdict and hoped the High Court would uphold it and that the sentence would be carried out without delay.
Simanto's father also expressed satisfaction with the verdict and called for its swift implementation.
According to the prosecution, Simanto, a second-year computer science student at AIUB, was on his way to university at around 6am on 12 December 2024 when he was intercepted by a group of snatchers in front of Morgan Girls' High School in the city's Deobhog area.
When Simanto resisted the robbery, the attackers stabbed him several times and fled with his bag and mobile phone.
Later, locals found him critically injured and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment on 14 December.
Following the incident, his father, Haji Alam, filed a murder case with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station. Police later arrested the three accused during separate drives.
The accused later gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, according to the prosecution.
After examining the testimony of four witnesses, the court handed down the verdict.
