Appellate Division stays bail of accused Shimul in MP Anar murder case
He was allegedly murdered and dismembered at a flat in the New Town area of Kolkata.
The Chamber Court of the Appellate Division has stayed the High Court order that granted bail to Shimul Bhuiyan, alias Amanullah Saeed, a key accused in the case filed over the abduction, conspiracy, and murder of former Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar in India's Kolkata in 2024.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division, passed the order yesterday (21 June), staying the High Court's decision. The matter came to light today (22 June).
Earlier, on 8 June, a High Court bench granted interim bail to Shimul Bhuiyan and issued a rule in connection with the matter.
Anwarul Azim Anar, a three-time MP was allegedly murdered and dismembered at a flat in the New Town area of Kolkata on 13 May 2024.
He went missing on 11 May 2024 after travelling to India for medical treatment. His friend, gold trader Gopal Biswas, filed a general diary in Kolkata, prompting investigations in both countries. It was later revealed that Anar had been murdered in a house in Kolkata, leading to a case being filed there.
Meanwhile, Anar's daughter, Mumtarin Ferdous Dorin also filed a case in Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, accusing individuals of abduction with intent to murder.
On 5 June 2024, Amanullah Saeed, also known as Shimul Bhuiyan, Shihab and Fazal Mohammad Bhuiyan, gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in connection with the case.
