Narayanganj BNP MP's son detained over extortion allegations
Jubo Dal expells him following detention
Police today (21 June) detained Khairul Islam Sajib, son of BNP lawmaker for Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon-Siddhirganj) Azharul Islam Mannan and senior joint convener of the district Jubo Dal, for questioning over multiple allegations, including extortion.
Confirming the matter, Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehedi said, "We received allegations of extortion against him. He was brought from Dhaka to Narayanganj."
He added that Sajib was later handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for further interrogation.
DMP Additional Commissioner and DB chief Shafiqul Islam told The Business Standard that Sajib was brought to the DB office for questioning over several allegations.
"If the allegations are found to be true, legal action will be taken. If not, he will be released," he said.
Asked about the specific allegations, Shafiqul declined to provide details.
According to police, Sajib was taken into custody from his residence in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area this afternoon with the assistance of the DB.
He was subsequently brought to the office of the Narayanganj superintendent of police around 5pm for questioning.
After more than an hour of interrogation, Sajib was transferred to the custody of the DB at around 7pm on the instructions of higher authorities.
A source within the district police said authorities had received several complaints against Sajib, including allegations related to extortion, threats and misconduct involving women.
"Investigations are ongoing, and further details cannot be disclosed at this stage in the interest of the probe," the source said.
Meanwhile, Jubo Dal expelled Sajib due to "clear allegations of his involvement in various irregularities", the organisation said in a statement tonight.
