A gunfight and brick-throwing incident took place between drug traders and police during an anti-drug drive in Fatullah, Narayanganj, last night (13 June).
Eight people, including five policemen, were injured after being hit by bricks. Police arrested three people, including suspected drug trader known as Fighter Monir, along with a large quantity of drugs during the drive.
The incident took place around 11pm yesterday at Patengar Mor in Fatullah's Masdair area.
The injured policemen are sub-inspectors (SIs) Nandan Sarkar and SI Monir; assistant SIs (ASIs) Kamrul Hasan and ASI Monir Hossain; and Constable Ashik. Three pedestrians — Helal Uddin, driver Babu, and AKM Shafiuddin — were also injured.
All of them received treatment at Khanpur Hospital in the city, Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam said.
The OC said that acting on a tip-off, police conducted a drive at fighter Monir's drug spot at Patengar Mor in Masdair.
During the drive, Fighter Monir and his associates Nayeem and Masum were arrested with a large quantity of drugs.
At that time, their associates tried to snatch the arrestees from police custody and first hurled bricks at the police indiscriminately.
Later, the drug traders fired around five to six rounds targeting the police.
Police also fired two rounds from a shotgun in retaliation.
Although no one sustained bullet injuries, five policemen were injured after being hit by bricks, the OC said.
He added that the drive was continuing in the area and details of the seized drugs would be disclosed later.
