A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two youths in the Fatullah area of Narayanganj district yesterday afternoon (22 May).
The incident triggered severe public outrage, culminating in a mass beating that left the prime suspect critically injured, while law enforcement detained his associate during a late-night raid.
The assault occurred in the Char Boyargadi area under the Baktaboli union of Fatullah last afternoon while the child was playing near her home.
According to locals, the two suspects – identified as Hero, son of Monir Hossain, and Sohel, the son of Jamal Patwari – lured the young girl away to an isolated spot where they subjected her to physical abuse.
Afterwards, the child's physical condition began to deteriorate rapidly, alarming her family members, who quickly uncovered the ordeal.
The victim was initially rushed to the Munshiganj General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
However, as her condition continued to worsen, doctors referred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
As news of the assault spread across the neighbourhood last night, local residents tracked down and cornered the prime suspect, Hero.
The agitated crowd subjected him to a mass beating, leaving him with severe injuries.
Upon receiving information regarding the unfolding violence, additional police forces rushed to the spot, rescued the injured suspect from the hands of the mob, and transported him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital under police custody for treatment.
Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mahbub Alam said, "One person injured in the mob beating is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. Another person has been detained."
The victim's statement has been taken to the court for recording, he added.
Amid this development, Fatullah police launched a coordinated late-night operation in the area to apprehend the other perpetrator.
During the drive, officers successfully arrested Hero's associate Sohel.
Following the dual police actions and the containment of the local unrest, the victim's mother visited Fatullah Police Station in the latter part of the night to lodge a written complaint detailing the crime, which police officially recorded to initiate legal proceedings against the two accused.
