The victim and her husband said they were afraid to return home because of concerns about local influential people.
Police have arrested two men, including a local Jubo Dal leader, in connection with a case filed over the alleged gang rape of a 33-year-old woman in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj.
The arrests were made on Friday (12 June) night after the woman filed a case with Sonargaon Police Station. Another accused named in the case remains at large.
The arrested men are Shahidul Islam Shahid, 40, general secretary of Ward 2 Jubo Dal in Jampur union, and his associate Shahin Miah, 38, both residents of the area.
The alleged incident took place on Wednesday (10 June) afternoon at a village in Jampur union.
Sonargaon Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Jamal Uddin said police arrested the two accused named in the case shortly after it was filed.
"Our drive is ongoing to arrest the other absconding accused," he said.
According to the case statement, the victim's husband works as a brick mason and the family lives in a rented tin-shed house. The woman alleged that three men entered the house on Wednesday afternoon while her husband was away and raped her in front of her two minor children.
The victim further alleged that after the incident became known, some influential local people attempted to settle the matter through arbitration. She later filed the case with the police station instead.
Yesterday afternoon, she was sent to Narayanganj Victoria General Hospital for a medical examination.
The victim and her husband said they were afraid to return home because of concerns about local influential people.
The woman's husband said the incident had not yet been disclosed to relatives on either side of the family and that they currently had nowhere else to stay. He said he was staying at the hospital with his wife for the time being.
Regarding the victim's security, Inspector Jamal said police would ensure her safety.
"Following the arrest of the two accused, she can live in her own house without fear. The police will provide security, and the concerned police outpost has been informed," he said.
