Ex-DGFI director Afzal Naser remanded afresh in July Uprising killing case
Afzal Naser was arrested from a residence on Road-12 in Mirpur DOHS by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on 30 March.
A Dhaka court has granted a three-day fresh remand for former DGFI director and former Lt Col Md Afzal Naser in connection with a murder case filed at Uttara East Police Station in the capital over the killing of a man named Mahmudul Hasan during the July Uprising.
The order was issued by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain following a hearing today (29 April), confirmed State Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashraful Alam Talukder of Uttara East Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought a fresh seven-day remand. Following the hearing, the court granted a three-day remand.

In the remand petition, investigators stated that preliminary findings and available evidence suggest the accused was involved in extensive acts of violence aimed at suppressing the anti-discrimination student movement and obstructing students and the public through organised violent activities.
The petition further argued that intensive custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the full circumstances and ensure a thorough investigation of the case.
Earlier, on 23 April, the court had granted a four-day remand in the same case. This was followed by a further two-day remand order issued on 27 April.
As per the case statement, on 5 August 2024, the victim, Mahmudul Hasan took part in a procession of the anti-discrimination student movement.
At around 4pm, when protesters reached the paved road beneath the Azampur foot overbridge on the eastern side of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway under Uttara East Police Station, the accused, along with unidentified individuals, allegedly opened fire while unlawfully armed, leaving Mahmudul Hasan with bullet injuries as he collapsed on the spot.
A murder case was subsequently filed by his family with the Uttara East Police Station.
