Rajshahi coaching centre raid: Owner, 2 others placed on 5-day remand in arms, explosive case
A Rajshahi court has granted a five-day remand for 'Doctor English' coaching centre owner Muntasirul Alam Anindya, along with Md Robin and Md Faisal, in a case filed under the Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Narcotics Control Act.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Court-2 Judge Md Mamunur Rashid passed the order today (17 August), after rejecting their bail petitions.
Public Prosecutor of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Ali Ashraf Masum said, "A joint force conducted a 14-hour raid from around 1:30am on Friday till 3:30pm Saturday at the 'Doctor English' coaching centre in Rajshahi's Kadirganj area. Following the raid, owner Muntasirul Alam, Robin and Faisal were detained."
"Later that night, police filed a case against them at Boalia Police Station under the Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Narcotics Control Act," he added.
Police today produced the three defendants before the court, seeking a seven-day remand for each. The judge granted five-day remands and rejected their bail petitions.
Defendants' lawyers refused to comment on this matter.
Earlier on Saturday (16 August), the raid led to the recovery of three firearms with ammunition, a military-grade binocular and sniper scope, six local weapons, seven foreign daggers, five walkie-talkie sets, a military-grade GPS, a taser gun, numerous cartridges, unused SIM cards, bomb-making equipment, six computers, Tk7,445, and local and foreign alcohol.
Additionally, 11 nitrogen cartridges were found and later neutralised by the Bomb Disposal Unit, as they contained live explosives.
Anindya is the son of former Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP vice-president Shafiul Alam Lattu and a relative of former Rajshahi mayor and Awami League leader AHM Khairuzzaman Liton. The coaching centre operates from a separate one-storey building adjacent to their house.
He had previously been arrested for alleged links to the 2016 Holey Artisan attack and the murder of Rajshahi University teacher Rezaul Karim, but was later acquitted.
