3 Aramit AGMs on 10-day remand over corruption ties to ex-land minister Saifuzzaman
The accused placed on remand are Md Abdul Aziz, Md Jahangir Alam, and Utpal Pal
A Dhaka court has granted a 10-day remand for three assistant general managers (AGMs) of Aramit PLC, who were close associates of former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury, in two separate corruption cases filed against them.
The court also ordered that the three be shown arrested in two additional cases lodged by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Following a hearing today (23 October), Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Foyez issued the order.
The accused placed on remand are Md Abdul Aziz, proprietor of Imperial Trading and AGM of Aramit; Md Jahangir Alam, proprietor of Classic Trading and AGM of Aramit; and Utpal Pal, AGM of Aramit.
Confirming the matter, ACC public prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi said, "Former land minister Saifuzzaman used these individuals to embezzle funds from various banks and financial institutions and launder the money abroad."
Earlier in the day, investigation officers produced the three before the court, seeking a 14-day remand—seven days in each of the two cases—and requested that they be shown arrested in two other corruption cases.
Defence lawyers petitioned for the remand applications to be rejected and sought bail for the accused, which the prosecution opposed.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted a total of 10 days' remand—five days in each of the two cases.
