Ex-MP Fazle Karim placed on 3-day remand in JCD leader Nurul Alam murder case
During the hearing, Fazle Karim joined virtually from prison
A Chattogram court has allowed the Criminal Investigation Department to take former Awami League lawmaker ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury into three-day remand for questioning in the murder case of former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Nurul Alam Nuru.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ibrahim Khalil issued the order today (24 November) after CID Inspector (Metro) Nasir Uddin Russell sought five days of remand, said Keshab Chakraborty, assistant commissioner (prosecution) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
During the hearing, Fazle Karim joined virtually from prison.
Nuru, a former joint general secretary of JCD's central committee, was picked up from his Chandanpura residence on the night of 29 March 2017. His body was recovered the next day from Karnafuli riverbank in Bagowan union, Raozan.
More than seven years later, on 1 September this year, Nuru's wife Sumi Akter filed a case with Chandgaon Police Station. The case named 17 people, including Fazle Karim as the prime accused, and listed 30 to 40 unidentified others.
The complaint alleges that Nuru was abducted and murdered on the orders of Fazle Karim, with then-Raozan Police Sub-Inspector Sheikh Muhammad Zaved leading the operation.
Fazle Karim, a five-time lawmaker from Chattogram-6 (Raozan), was arrested by Border Guard Bangladesh on 12 September last year while attempting to flee to India after the fall of the Awami League government following the uprising on 5 August.
