Dismissed DGFI official Manjil Haider placed on 3-day remand in Rubel murder case
Manjil was arrested on 9 April from the DOHS area in Mohakhali.
A Dhaka court has placed dismissed major Manjil Haider Chowdhury, a former official of the DGFI, on a three-day remand in a case filed over the killing of garment worker Md Rubel during the July Uprising in the capital's Adabor area.
The order was given by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam after a hearing today (7 May), confirmed Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecutor's Department.
Manjil was arrested on 9 April from the DOHS area in Mohakhali. Initially, he was remanded for 12 days in three phases in a case involving the death of businessman Abdul Wadud, filed with New Market Police Station.
Later, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Ramna Model Police Station, he was sent on a third round of 12-day remand. On 3 May, he was arrested in the Rubel murder case and remanded for four days.
After completing the four-day remand, he was produced before the court, where the investigation officer, Inspector Md Amjad Hossain Talukdar of DB Police's Ramna Zone, sought an additional seven-day remand.
In response, defence lawyer Kamal Hossain sought bail and requested that the remand plea be rejected.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor Muhammad Shamshuddoha Sumon argued in favour of the remand. After the hearing, the court granted a three-day remand.
According to the case statement, during the July Uprising, Rubel joined hundreds of students and protesters in a demonstration on Ring Road under Adabor Police Station at around 11am on 5 August.
At that time, police and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, Tanti League, Krishak League and Matsyajibi League allegedly opened fire.
Rubel was injured in the shooting and died while undergoing treatment on 7 August.
His father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case with Adabor Police Station on 22 August.
