EC finds errors in NCP, 143 other parties' registration, gives 15 days to fix

The Election Commission (EC) has found errors in the registration applications of 144 new political parties, including the National Citizen Party (NCP).
These parties have been asked to correct the issues and submit the necessary documents within 15 days.
EC Additional Secretary KM Ali Newaz shared the information with the media today (15 July).
He said letters will be sent to 62 parties in the first phase, with the remaining 82, including NCP, to be notified in the second phase.
"All parties must address the discrepancies within the deadline," he added.
The EC had earlier invited applications from political parties for registration by 20 April, later extending the deadline to 22 June. By then, 144 parties submitted a total of 147 applications. None of the parties passed the preliminary screening, EC officials confirmed.
Under the law, a party must have a central committee, committees in one-third of the districts and in at least 100 upazilas, and proof of support from 200 voters for each committee. A party is also eligible if it previously had a Member of Parliament or received at least 5% of the votes in a past election. Other rules must also be followed during the application process.
After initial screening, the EC verifies party information through field investigations before issuing a public notice seeking claims and objections. Hearings are held if objections arise. If there are none, registration certificates are issued. Without registration, parties cannot contest elections using their own symbol.
